Graysen's First Trip To The Fair

Our county fair is this week and lucky for us, it's only 12 miles from our house! Graysen and I met Marit and John along with Jodie and her four kids. Tim joined us later. Tim and I are going again tomorrow afternoon with Graysen so I'll put those pictures up tomorrow night hopefully.
We have lots of animals at our fair and it was so fun to take Graysen through the barns. I did step in what was basically a mixture of liquid poop and sawdust because there was no other way around it, but it was all worth it to see him enthralled with the animals. He studied them, smiled at them and even got to touch them! The animals were my favorite part of the fair as a child (I hated rides then and still do) so it was great to see him enjoy them too! We also have many friends' children and students that show animals at the fair so we like to go support them. Tomorrow the Midway will be open. It wasn't open this morning when we went. It was just opening as we were leaving. Here are some highlights from the day.

Graysen doesn't look to excited to see the chickens!

John LOVED the chickens!

CHICKENS!

Graysen was more thrilled to see the goats!

He just watched them intently!

Cows! It was Dairy Day at the fair so the kids were showing their Dairy Cows.

Steers that will be shown tomorrow!

Aubrey got to pet the sheep.

Jodie and her kids!

Classic Aubrey! All she's missing is the Mocha Frappe that she talked about ALL MORNING!

Grant loved the pigs! He also loved "driving" the stroller and honking the horn at everyone!

This pig was snorting at us and got snot all over us. Graysen thought it was funny!

The fair is tiring. Notice Aubrey in the background patiently waiting for her Mocha Frappe that she talked about wanting ALL MORNING! She was hungry, but just Mocha Frappe hungry!

Grant had to check on Graysen.

These horses wanted to sniff Graysen. So cute!

Graysen was enthralled with the horses!

This horse wanted to either kiss or nibble on Marit!

Graysen needs a pony, Daddy!

The gang!
In the stroller: Grant, then Aubrey and Kyle
In the back from left to right: Marit with John, Jodie with Quentin, and me with Graysen

I'm back! Hopefully...

Wow...I can't believe it's been 4 months since my last post! I promise to start posting more. Graysen is already 6mo old and weighs in at 18lbs and 28in. I will try to put up a 6mo Graysen post as well as a progression of newborn, 3mo, 6mo photos this week. It's amazing how much has happened in the last 4 months. Graysen is sitting up on his own, eating a ton of solids (he ate 1/2-3/4 of a pancake at Breakfast with Santa on Saturday), crawling  rolling all over the house (his preferred method of transportation at the moment), pulling himself up on things...it's insane how fast time goes!

I had planned on posting my weight loss on here. Well, that went super fast too! I am already down 45lbs, which is almost 10lbs more than what I had gained originally, which is funny because I had said I wanted to lose 10lbs before I got pregnant and that didn't happen. It was all nursing/pumping. I {hanging my head} didn't work out and ate whatever I wanted, but the weight seemed to pour off! I hope it doesn't come back on after I quit nursing/pumping. Guess I better get my butt in gear and start working out. The "New Year" is right around the corner...

I cannot wait to hopefully be posting more again. I have missed it. I plan to try to post more than just baby stuff too. I am hoping to post more DIY projects and recipes as well! Stay tuned for more posts!!

Versatile Blogger Award

I was fortunate enough to be nominated for a Versatile Blogger Award by Hannah over at Supermommy!...or not. Thank you Hannah! I'm flattered! Hannah has an awesome blog and wonderful Etsy Shop, Annalie's Baby Boutique

So...after being nominated, I am to tell you 7 random things about myself. I always hate having to come up with things about myself when doing an ice-breaker activity and so on. I don't think my life is that exciting, but here goes nothing.

1. My dream job is to own my own store, where I sell things that I have bought at flea markets and have fixed up or refurbished. My parents would get so annoyed with me when I was younger because I would constantly either be "re-purposing" our existing furniture/stuff or taking new stuff and trying to find a different use for it. I was "green" before being green was cool!

2. I LOVE antiquing/picking/auctions. Again, this goes with #1. My favorite thing to do on the weekends is visit the antique mall  or an auction with my best friend and/or my husband. My father-in-law is an auctioneer. I swear that if Tim and I win the lottery, we'll become professional pickers!

3. My hair has probably been every color imaginable. It's now my natural color (I think). My cousin's wife is a hair stylist and she used to 'experiment' on me with the new colors. I figured, "It's just hair, right?" It's been brown, blonde, red, auburn, had pink streaks, been so black it was almost blue, had a purple tinge to it...the list goes on!

4. I am extremely shy and hate being the center of attention. I may not seem shy to most, but I work very hard at being outgoing and overcome my social anxiety. I hate large crowds!

5. Despite my shyness and fear of crowds, I am a pretty good public speaker and loved Speech in high school/college. I think it was because I obsessively went over what I was going to say and practiced a lot so that I didn't even need to use note cards.

6. I am not a fan of my birthday or surprises. Not because I don't want to get older, but I always want to know what's going to happen and don't like to be out of the loop. My birthday was/is always a reminder of my biological parents giving me up and again, I don't like being the center of attention. When I was in 1st grade, I had a birthday party with all of the girls in my grade invited. Mind you, I'm an only child. Needless to say, I was in tears the whole time and that was THE LAST TIME I had a big birthday party. We celebrate my "Gotcha Day" or the day I was adopted and it means more than my birthday!

7. I'm pretty sure I have A.D.D. (Attention Deficit Disorder) and I blame it on the kindergartners rubbing off on me, but I've had it my whole life. I'm also O.C.D. about things and get a high from organizing which is so ironic considering I have a million projects going at once and my house/classroom is always in a disarray, but hey, creativity is messy and I'm very creative! I do though LOVE everything coordinating and in it's place. I"ll always line things up in rainbow order as well and get a high buying organizing/office supplies.

Now I get to nominate some of my favorite blogs!

Junk Gypsy
It's A Hunt Life
K-1 Teaching Besties
Christenson Daily Snapshots
Cotton Bottom Mama
See Kate Sew
Sprinkles to Kindergarten
First Grade Fresh
The Castro Family Happynings
Pencils, Glue and Tying Shoes

Those of you nominated, here are the rules!

1.Thank the blogger who nominated you.
2. Include a link to their site.
3. Include the award image in your post.
4. Give 7 random facts about yourself.
5. Nominate 15 other blogs for the award.
6. When nominating, include a link to their site.
7. Let the bloggers know they have been nominated.

Happy Blogging!

Month 2 Must Haves

I can't believe Graysen is two and a half months old! Here are some things we couldn't live without during month two.

Tommee Tippee Bottles
Since we are mainly pumping and bottling breast milk, these Tommee Tippee bottles are a must. We LOVE them! They have a great anti-colic/anti-gas valve and are closer to breastfeeding than other bottles. Graysen likes them and doesn't choke on his milk like with the Medela bottles. We have them in 5oz and 9oz. Graysen drinks anywhere between 4-6oz and sometimes 7oz at a time.

PlayGro Play Mat
Graysen loves this play mat that he got for a shower gift. The toys on the side hang low enough for him to hit right now. The arch also comes off and can go over the crib or along the crib rail. Lots of floor time is spent here playing.

Avent Pacifiers
We like these Avent Pacifiers that were also given to us. They are orthodontic, so they don't hurt his gums or the teeth that will come in. It's almost time to move to the next ones.

Fleurville Carrier
We got this Fleurville carrier and it's wonderful. We have it in gray and green. It's great for doing things around the house and having your hands free. It also has three different carrying options.

Carter's Rompers
Carter's rompers are a must for the summer time. They are so easy to throw on, wash well and are so stinkin' cute! I love all the striped polo shirts!

Carter's Sleep & Plays
Carter's sleep and plays are a MUST! You can't have too many of these! They also wash well and don't lose their shape or softness. Also, babies are so darn cute in these jammies!

Brica Bug Cover
Living in MN in the summer brings lots of mosquitoes and other pests. This bug cover by Brica is amazing! It fits right over his car seat for walks on the trail through the woods and also has a sun cover. We got ours at Target. If you couldn't tell, we love shopping at Target!

Brica Travel Bassinet
Another must is by Brica as well! It's a travel bassinet. We have used this in two hotels, at the beach, at Grandma and Grandpas and many other places. It folds up easily and comes with two sheets. It's also available at Target.

Those are a few of the things that we have loved over the past month. What are some things that you couldn't live without??

Miscellaneous Mommy Monday: EPing

Today's post is all about EPing, or Exclusively Pumping. I wanted to share a little about my nursing/pumping experience. It has been a long road, but we are at a good place now. It was a very bumpy road to start. I still had part of my placenta, after a horrific post-delivery experience, so I was unable to make milk for awhile. Graysen obviously had to have a bottle and was supplemented with formula for the first week or so until my milk started to come in. I was pumping like crazy with a special hospital-grade pump that had a preemie setting. It hurt and gave me cramps like crazy! At first I would barely get a drop of colostrum on each side, which the nurses were scraping off with a spoon and feeding to Graysen in a little tiny syringe. I was pumping every two hours after attempting to nurse him, trying to make my milk come in, and then giving him a bottle. Needless to say, I was getting NO SLEEP! I probably got about 3-4 hours a day for the first 2 weeks. I tried to sleep while he slept, but that wasn't always feasible.

After about 10 days of pumping around the clock with the special pump, I was getting about an ounce total! FINALLY...my milk had come in! Graysen DID NOT want to nurse and would just scream when we tried it. He would arch his back, grunt, swing his head from side to side and just downright refuse to nurse! This ended with me frustrated and in tears! He had had a bottle for too long! I tried a nipple shield, which was a lifesaver for awhile and helped get him to latch on better.

Then I just said, I'm going to strictly nurse and make him have to get his food that way. I did this for a whole weekend and it was tiring. It resulted in cluster feedings about every hour, but it helped and he started to nurse better after a few days. I went back to pumping every couple hours because my supply was starting to diminish. This helped and my supply started rising.

I was getting about 4oz total at each pumping now! WOO HOO! I was still pumping every few hours around the clock after trying to nurse and then giving a bottle. The nights were getting long and I was losing lots of sleep. Let me fill you in on what a typical day of nursing, pumping and bottle feeding looks like:

6:15am - bottle 5oz
7:00am - pump 7oz*
9:30am - BF 20min
10:30am - BF 25min
12:30pm - BF 20min
1:00pm - pump 3.5oz*
1:15pm - bottle 2oz
3:15pm - bottle 4.5oz
4:00pm - pump 5oz*
5:20pm - BF 15min
6:30pm - BF 15min
7:00pm - bottle 4oz
9:00pm - bottle 4oz
9:30pm - pump 6.5oz*
10:30pm - BF 10min
10:40pm - bottle 3oz
1:00am - pump 5.5oz*
4:00am - bottle 4oz
4:15am - pump 4.5oz*
7:30am - bottle 2oz
7:45am - pump 6.5oz*

This is sort of what a typical day looked like a month after birth. This day I only had 7 pumps but usually I had at least 8 or 9. I like to get in at least 8. (as many pumpings as feedings) After awhile I said, "Ok...I'm going to EP and it should save me time and frustration." So...I went to diligently pumping every two hours and strictly bottle feeding. Tim was able to help more with the feedings and my milk production skyrocketed! I was also drinking Mother's Milk Tea and faithfully taking my prenatal vitamins. I was no longer nursing, but only pumping and bottle feeding. This was still 'round-the-clock pumping'.

I could pump 2 bottles at each pumping finally! The mid-day pumps usually only resulted in one or a little more than one. He was now eating about 4oz at each feeding and I could pump at least 8oz.
I thought, "This is great! I can monitor how much he gets, really get ahead on freezing milk and Tim could help!"

Eventually, I started to resent the pump, especially at night. I was able to cut back to pumping only every 3 hours during the day and then go more like 4 or 4.5 hours at night. I wasn't waking him to eat, but I would still have to get up to pump and then it never failed, I would be back in bed for a half hour or so and then he would wake up hungry!

Since I was pumping so much at a time, I didn't want to go back to nursing so much that my supply dropped because he wasn't eating as much as I was pumping. Something had to be tweaked and there had to be a happy medium!
SO....

I am now, basically EPing. I pump during the day about every 3 or 4 hours. I could go longer, but I'm really sore if I do. I had a plugged duct once and that was HORRIBLE. I don't want that again. He basically gets a bottle during the day unless I'm somewhere and didn't bring a bottle or if I know I have time to pump after he nurses to keep my supply up. At night, he gets a bottle before he goes to bed, around 8:30pm and it's usually about 5oz. I pump sometime before I go to bed, usually around 10pm or so.  The next time he wakes up, which is around 2am, I will most likely nurse him and then pump, or Tim will get up and feed him so I can pump while he eats. Sometimes, I wake up before he's up and then quick pump before he gets a bottle. He then wakes up normally around 5:30am and that's when I nurse him. I'm not sure what will happen when school starts in a week, but this is what's working for us right now.

I had once resented my pump, when it was all I was doing and could not be away from it. Now, after seeing how much I've been able to freeze and stock up on (over 300oz in about 3 weeks!! That's like 2 gallons), I enjoy it. I am freezing about 4 or 5 bottles a day. Sometimes even more on a good day.

I know that if I don't want to bring my pump along, I don't have to because I can nurse him again and he nurses well now! It took a lot of work and time. We went back, gave it another shot and stuck to it. I don't have to nurse, but I don't have to pump and I can do both if I want. I pump approximately 50-60oz a day or more some days and he eats roughly 30oz. I am almost storing a whole day, every day! I like to keep about 3 or 4 bottles in the fridge. If I have 3 bottles and he's just eaten or 4 bottles before he eats in the fridge, I'll freeze all that I pump. Otherwise, I'll bottle one, freeze one.

I also have not had to supplement with formula this way. He only had to have formula for the first 5 days and only at a couple feedings a day. I have found a happy medium for us and it works. What works for us, will not work for everyone. I have a super supportive husband who is great at tag-teaming. I still have to put pumping/feeding before other things and sometimes leave places or be left out for awhile while I pump, but it's worth it right now. I know that my baby is getting 100% breast milk and that's important to us. I know that formula is fine and I'm supportive of my friends who use formula. That works for them and this works for us! I'm fortunate that I can do this right now. We may have to supplement some once school starts again, and that's ok, but for now...I'm happy to know that I'm providing fully for my baby. After all of the trauma that happened, I want to do everything I can try and strictly use breast milk.

When people ask if I'm breast feeding, I usually just say, "Yes." because it's easier than explaining, but I like to think of it this way...
You can get a beer in a bottle or a beer on tap and it's still a beer. Graysen is just getting his milk in a bottle most of the time and on tap once in awhile. Breast milk in a bottle or breast milk on tap...still breast milk!

Here are some tips that helped me really get my supply up and going.

TIPS

I have found that if I put the milk in a quart-sized Ziplock freezer bag, I can write the date, amount and time on the front and freeze them flat. This way, I can stack them up in the deep freeze and they take up so much less room! I then can put a few in a big Ziplock bag and write the dates of the small bags on the one big bag. When daycare starts in a few weeks, I can just grab a couple big bags and she has the whole day in one big bag. I have not had to dip into the frozen ones yet.

Drink LOTS of water. I find that 30 seconds after starting to pump, I am more dehydrated than ever! I drink about 3 liters a day or more. I try to have a big glass at every pumping plus more throughout the day. My bathroom breaks haven't really been anymore frequent either because I pump so much that I think I get rid of excess fluid that way!

Eat! Eat healthy and often! This will help your supply as well.

I found that nursing him again, even once a day, made my supply go back up too. It dipped down for a short time, but once I started nursing him, even for a short time, triggered my hormones and helped me produce more.

Here is the tip that has helped the most and really helped me not resent or dread pumping. It's also a HUGE time saver. You don't have to wash your pump parts every time! Rinse them off, put them in a Ziplock bag and stick it in the fridge. Breast milk has wonderful antibiotic properties and by doing this, you only have to wash the parts once a day!

I also have two sets of pump parts which helps a lot as well.
I bought the wipes to clean the parts without water for times when I'm in the car or someplace without water or fridge access...or if I'm in a hurry.

Take and use what you want from my experience. I did a lot of research and reading about upping my supply and exclusively pumping.I took some ideas and figured out somethings on my own that worked. Everyone is different and will have a different experience. I'd love to hear about your nursing/pumping experiences.

Graysen's First Camping Trip

This week, we took Graysen camping for the first time up north and stayed at Tim's cousin's camper. We spent Saturday night in a Hotel in Brainerd, MN and then went to the camper on Sunday. We came home late Wednesday night. Here are some highlights from the trip.

It takes a lot of "STUFF" to go camping with a baby!

Very strategic packing on my part...

Graysen is going for his first walk around the campground. Good thing we invested in a bug canopy for his car seat carrier. The mosquitoes were HORRIBLE since they had had so much rain lately. We got this canopy at Target for around $20. It's a Brica.

Our "home away from home" for the 4 days. Thanks to Tim's cousin and his wife for letting us use it!

Later that day, we decided to go mini golfing at Pirate's Cove. Graysen looks thrilled to be there. It was hot, but once we got outside, there was a good breeze. Notice how greasy he is from all the sunscreen...

First hole! I went first and got a hole-in-one. Not sure what's so hard about mini golfing!

Showing Tim how it's done!

Tim's turn.

We were both oh-so-close!

Too bad Graysen slept the whole time because he missed the Pirate Ship...

and multiple water falls, which they tint blue so they are really pretty.

I think he was in the middle of a stretch, but he looks goofy!

After 17 holes and 4 holes-in-one by me...2 by Tim, we were finally on the last hole. You had to pick a hole up here and your ball dropped down to the level below where there was another hole that took your ball back to the clubhouse. I went first, since I was in the lead, and just hit it in the middle of both holes. I didn't care which hole it went it. It went down the left one, to the bottom and rolled right into the hole! HOLE-IN-ONE AGAIN! Tim went in the same hole...

but his came out and stayed there!

Final score - MB: 5 under & Tim: Par. I ended with 5 hole-in-ones and Tim had 2. I'd like to say it was skill, but I'm pretty sure it was just luck. I don't putt that good in real golf!

This was the wheel you got to spin afterwards and if it landed on a hole that you had a hole-in-one on, you got a free game...we lost!

Mini golfing is tiring. Graysen is cooling off on the floor of the camper.

The next day, we went down to the lake. The water was really up because of all the rain. It's usually 75 feet or so farther out, which made the beach area small, but it was still nice. The water was about 75*. I just wish Graysen was a little older so we could have actually gone out in it more.

Another lifesaver on the trip was our portable bassinet. Graysen slept in this the whole trip. This is also from Target and is also made by Brica. He liked sitting in the breeze under the sport umbrella. (Never mind the camera strap...)

Enjoying the lake air!

The first day, was very breezy on the lake and the wind kept wanting to take the umbrella. Notice Tim holding it down on the next day until we were sure it wasn't going to blow away. It was a calmer day this day and we stuck it in the wet sand down closer to the water which helped. Graysen was napping away in the fresh air.

Toes in the sand...

Seashells!

Graysen loved hanging out with Daddy by the water.

Now that he is starting to hold himself up, it was fun putting him in the water. At first, he wasn't so sure and didn't really like his feet in the sand. Once he stood on Tim's feet and let the water rush over them, he enjoyed it more. Eventually, he really liked standing in the sand and letting the little waves crash over him.

It was a spectacular vacation with many awesome memories made. The first night that we spent at the hotel went great. I thought he wouldn't sleep because he slept in the car all day on the way up. He slept wonderfully! He made up for it the next night. The first night in the camper was rough and all that sleep caught up with him. It got better though. We decided to leave at 7pm on Wednesday though to come home so that he slept in the car during his 'normal' sleep hours. I can't wait to do more things as a family, especially when he gets to be a little older and really starts to enjoy the lake and outdoor fun!
